More about this artwork
This painting by George Stubbs, titled "Greenland Falcon," meticulously captures a regal falcon perched on a wooden block amidst a serene landscape. The falcon stands proud and alert, featured prominently in the foreground with an exquisite level of detail that highlights its piercing eyes and the striking patterns of its feathers. The backdrop of the painting presents a soft, muted landscape, with lush greenery and subtle hints of mountains, creating a harmonious contrast to the sharp appearance of the falcon.Stubbs' choice of colors and textures brings a gentle luminescence to the bird, drawing attention to its noble positioning and intricately painted plumage. The soft blues, grays, and whites of the falcon's feathers are rendered with such precision that they convey not just the bird's physical characteristics but also a sense of its character, perhaps hinting at its keen and fierce nature. The landscape, while subdued, complements the bird's demeanor with its calm and understated beauty, suggesting a natural harmony between the creature and its environment.Overall, the painting reflects George Stubbs' celebrated ability to combine anatomical accuracy with a poetic sense of composition and mood, capturing both the essence of the falcon and the spirit of the natural world it inhabits.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
