More about this artwork
"A Repose After Shooting" by George Stubbs is a compelling depiction of leisure and hunting in the late 18th century. In the painting, three central figures take a moment to rest amidst a dense forest. Two gentlemen are shown, one seated and relaxed, leaning against a large tree trunk, holding a gun, suggesting that they have been hunting. Beside them, a servant or attendant in motion, gesturing with his hand, possibly recounting a tale or discussing their hunt. This dynamic between the figures illustrates a moment of communication and relaxation after the exertion of shooting. The painting features two dogs, which appear calm and restful, contributing to the serene atmosphere. These dogs are typically associated with hunting, and their relaxed poses reinforce the theme of repose. The backdrop of the scene is a densely wooded forest with towering trees and intricate foliage, painted in deep greens and browns. The artist has paid great attention to the details of the natural setting, which envelops the scene and emphasizes the tranquility of the moment. The light in the painting subtly filters through the trees, creating a serene and somewhat muted atmosphere which enhances the feeling of a secluded retreat into nature.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
