More about this artwork

This painting by George Stubbs, titled "Phaeton with a Pair of Cream Ponies and a Stable-Lad," is a tranquil depiction set in a serene, rustic landscape. It portrays a young stable lad holding the reins of a pair of cream-colored ponies, which are harnessed to an elegant phaeton carriage. The lingering light suggests it might be early morning or late afternoon, a time when the softness of the light enhances the gentleness of the scene. The phaeton, a light open carriage, is elegantly designed with a high seat and gracefully curved body, representing a vehicle meant for leisurely drives. The ponies are beautifully rendered, showing Stubbs' keen observation and skill in painting animals, particularly horses, which he is renowned for. Their creamy, sleek coats and calm demeanor are in harmony with the peaceful environment. The stable lad, clad in a simple white attire with a hat, is depicted with a sense of responsibility and care as he manages the ponies. He stands attentively, ensuring the safety and readiness of the horses, which adds a human element to the scene, complementing the natural setting and the leisurely purpose of the carriage. In the background, the landscape is subdued with various shades of green and hints of blue, suggesting a lush, wooded area. The distant horizon is lightly misted, which may indicate the freshness of the setting, possibly the English countryside.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
