More about this artwork
Wassily Kandinsky's painting "Study on 'Panic'" from 1907 showcases a rather dynamic and vivid scene filled with figures and colors that seem to illustrate a state of chaos or emotional upheaval, aligning with the theme of "panic." The composition is rich with a variety of characters and elements, and like much of Kandinsky's work from this period, it features his exploration into expressiveness and abstract representation. In the painting, the use of dark tones and contrasting, vibrant colors helps to evoke a sense of intensity and urgency. Looking at the details, you can see a group of figures in the foreground, their faces and gestures painted in an expressive manner that suggests fear or agitation. These figures include a person waving their arms in the middle, surrounded by others who appear equally distressed or otherwise emotionally engaged. On the left, two figures clad in darker, muted colors stand close together, conveying a more somber and collected energy compared to the chaos around them. The background features vague landscape elements and colorful, abstract forms, possibly indicating trees or structures, under a tumultuous sky streaked with dark and fiery hues, enhancing the overall atmosphere of distress. This work is a brilliant example of Kandinsky's early expressionist style before he moved towards complete abstraction. It encapsulates his interest in the psychic and emotional resonances of color and form, arranging these elements in ways that reach beyond realistic depiction to touch on universal human emotions and experiences.
