More about this artwork
The painting "Horse Team and a St. Bernhard in the Snow" by Edvard Munch painted in 1923, is a vibrant and expressive artwork that captures a winter scene filled with movement and life. The piece prominently features two horses and a St. Bernard dog set against a snowy landscape. On the left, a dark horse appears in motion, perhaps trotting towards the viewer, painted with thick, energetic brush strokes that emphasize the animal's strength and dynamic movement. Next to this, a lighter-colored horse, possibly white or gray, is depicted with an equally vigorous style but in a slightly different posture, adding to the impression of motion and liveliness. At the bottom right corner, a St. Bernard dog is shown lying in the snow. The dog's relaxed posture contrasts with the energy of the horses, providing a balance to the composition. The use of warm oranges and yellows in its fur stands out against the cool whites and blues of the snowy background, drawing attention to the dog and adding a pop of color. In the background, simple structures hint at a human presence in this chilly environment, and a pale sky looms above, suggesting the coldness of the winter day.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.
His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
