More about this artwork

"Winter on the Fiord" by Edvard Munch, painted in 1915, masterfully captures the stark beauty and serene atmosphere of a northerly landscape in wintertime. This painting depicts a frozen fjord surrounded by snow-covered landscapes. The foreground presents uneven mounds of snow with pathways or patches of exposed earth, suggesting either rocky terrain or a previously traveled path that has been partially covered by fresh snow. The expansive body of water visible in the middle of the painting interacts gracefully with the land, displaying patches of ice or reflections hinting at the chilling temperatures. Across the fjord, faintly in the background, there is a range of hills or low mountains, their outlines softened by either mist or the gentle brushstrokes Munch employs.Featuring a subdued palette dominated by whites, blues, and purples with hints of earth tones, Munch communicates the cold, almost melancholic, essence of winter. Yet, the scene avoids feeling bleak, imbued instead with a sense of peace and natural beauty. The brushstrokes and coloring technique suggest the cold wind and harsh environment, highlighting nature's dual role as both a serene and a formidable force. This painting reflects Munch’s ability to convey profound emotion and atmosphere, which is characteristic of his approach to art, typically filled with symbolic meaning and exploration of human sentiments connected to the natural surroundings.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
