More about this artwork

"Boys Bathing" is a fascinating piece by Edvard Munch, depicting a serene yet intriguing scene of juvenility and play by the water. The painting shows four boys on the verge of entering a body of water, as suggested by the greenish-blue background that occupies most of the canvas. What is particularly striking about this piece is the presence of three distinctly elongated figures, interpreted as swimmers, captured midway through their diving motions. The swimmers are presented in almost an ethereal form, with their bodies elongated and colored in shades of green and yellow, suggesting a dynamic, almost ghostly motion into the water. Their heads are simplistically depicted, with large, dark, round spots indicating their faces or heads, which adds an abstract quality to the depiction.Closer to the foreground, the boys standing by the water are rendered in a more realistic and detailed manner compared to the swimmers. Each boy is uniquely colored, varying from nudes to a deep rust-colored garment, which could be seen as swimwear or casual, period-appropriate clothing worn by youths during a swim. Their postures suggest anticipation or observation, as they appear to be watching the action in the water or waiting their turn to enter. The painting, while simple in its composition, conveys a profound feeling of youthfulness, motion, and a moment paused in time — combining a sense of everyday joy with a mystical or dreamlike overlay.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
