More about this artwork
This painting by Goyo Hashiguchi, titled "Ducks," is a beautiful example of Japanese woodblock printmaking. It features two ducks floating on a tranquil body of water. The duck in the foreground is depicted with great detail, showcasing vibrant and variegated plumage along with a sharply defined bill and bright, alert eyes. This contrasts with the second duck, viewed from behind, which is depicted with a soft blur of colors that suggest gentle movement. The water around the ducks is rendered in serene blue tones, and gentle ripples surround the birds, suggesting their gentle motion through the water. A single white water lily in full bloom can be seen to the right, complimented by a nearby lily pad, further enhancing the serene and naturalistic setting of the scene. The artist's attention to the texture and color of the ducks' feathers and the subtle gradations of blue in the water highlight his mastery of the woodblock technique, capturing a moment of calm beauty in nature. The signature and seal of the artist are visible on the top right, adding a traditional touch to the composition. This artwork is a soothing, picturesque portrayal of nature, typical of Hashiguchi's sensitive and refined style.
