More about this artwork

The painting titled "Evening Moon Over Kōbe" by Goyo Hashiguchi is a delicate and tranquil portrayal of a serene evening in the city of Kobe, Japan. Dominating the composition is a large, elegant clump of willow trees in the foreground, their long, flowing branches gently swaying, giving a sense of calm movement against the still backdrop. Behind the lush greenery, the viewer can see the silhouette of a row of traditional Japanese houses with their distinctive tiled roofs, adding a touch of architectural interest and setting the scene firmly in Japan. In the middle distance, gently rolling hills stretch across the horizon, suggesting the varied topography of the Kobe region. Above this landscape, the sky transitions from a warm, pale orange glow at the horizon, where the last light of the setting sun lingers, to a deep, rich blue of the early night sky. This color gradient enhances the feeling of the day's end giving way to night. The sky's centerpiece is a thinly crescent moon hanging delicately in the sky, casting a soft, peaceful light. This celestial element not only adds a dreamy mood to the scene but also emphasizes the passage of time and the onset of evening.
