More about this artwork
This lithograph created by Berthe Morisot features a series of four portrait sketches, each capturing different subjects with varied expressions and poses. The artwork is rendered in a monochromatic palette, primarily using black and white which adds a sense of depth and emotion to the figures. In the top left corner, we see the portrait of a young girl with an intense expression, her gaze slightly downward and hair ornamented with what appears to be a hairpin or small flower. Her dress suggests a style from the late 19th or early 20th century, reflecting the period's fashion.Adjacent to this, in the top right corner, there's another young girl with a softer expression compared to the first. Her features are gently rendered, and her hair flows freely, providing a contrast to the more severe appearance of the first portrait. The bottom left sketch shows an older girl or young woman viewed in profile. This portrait stands out due to its more defined lines and cleaner style compared to the other, more softly sketched images, giving it a slightly more modern feel. The final image, in the bottom right, is a touching depiction of a mother and child, capturing a moment of intimacy and care.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
