More about this artwork

The painting "Valentine Tessier" by Max Beckmann depicts a woman seated next to a dark-colored curtain, her body turned slightly towards the viewer. She is dressed in a sleeveless blue dress with white trim that elegantly drapes over her form. Her blonde hair is cropped short, and she wears a pensive expression as she applies makeup with a brush to one of her eyes, which are strikingly emphasized with theatrical makeup or perhaps represents her as wearing a mask. The woman's pose is both casual and contemplative, her left hand touching her shoulder in a delicate gesture. The background is minimally detailed, primarily filled with a soft, neutral tone that focuses attention on the figure and her immediate surroundings, including the curtain and the chair's armrest, where a cat is resting. The cat, rendered in strokes of white, orange, and black, adds a personal and intimate detail to the scene, suggesting a homely or private setting.Beckmann's style here is characteristic of his work, with bold, expressive lines and rich colors that convey depth and emotion. The painting resonates with an air of introspection and subtle complexity, inviting viewers to contemplate the inner life of the portrayed figure, Valentine Tessier.

Actors, cabaret singers, heroes and thugs in a harsh postwar urban life by German artist Max Beckmann (1884-1950). His paintings show boldness, lust, and pain through delineated figures. The Nazi rule forced Beckmann to resign as an art professor and declared his artworks as degenerate. He later left for America where he lived in exile, yet remained active as an artist.
