More about this artwork

This painting by Kitagawa Utamaro, titled "Geisha with a Lapdog," is a striking example of the artist's mastery in portraying delicate and subtle expressions, a hallmark feature of his work. The artwork portrays a geisha, the traditional Japanese female entertainers known for their skills in various arts like music, dance, and conversation. The geisha is depicted with a poised and serene expression, looking slightly to her left. Her appearance is meticulously detailed, with a sophisticated hairstyle characterized by elegant ornaments and multiple hairpins. Her kimono is subtly designed, combining plain and patterned fabrics that showcase a delicate floral motif continuing onto her obi (sash), which suggests both her grace and her status. In her arms, she holds a small, furry lapdog, which appears to be lovingly cradled and considered a companion rather than merely a pet. The presence of the dog adds a layer of intimacy to the scene, indicating the geisha's personal life and perhaps the trends of pet-keeping among the wealthy and cultured classes in Japan during Utamaro's time.Utamaro's use of line and color reinforces the elegance of the scene. The lines are fine but confident, perfectly outlining the forms and contributing to the tranquil and composed air of the geisha.
