More about this artwork

"La Parisienne" by Édouard Manet is a stunning portrait that captures the essence of Parisian fashion and societal norms of the late 19th century. The woman depicted in the painting stands with an assertive yet elegant posture, dressed in a long, dark and richly embellished dress which accentuates her refined taste and social status. Her attire, complete with a fitted jacket and a flared skirt, showcases the intricate details and textures that Manet masterfully portrays with loose, expressive brushwork. Her accessories include a chic hat adorned with a veil and a feather, a hint of a white collar, and gloves, all of which contribute to her sophisticated appearance. The choice of a mostly monochromatic scheme with shades of black and gray allows her pale complexion and blonde hair to stand out, adding a stark contrast that draws the viewer’s eyes directly to her poised expression. She holds what appears to be a fan in one hand, a common accessory for women of her time, enhancing the period-specific allure of the painting. The background is muted and nondescript, a characteristic style of Manet, which further emphasizes the subject herself.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French modernist painter and one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life. His impressionist style is characterized by relatively small and thin brushstrokes that create emphasis on light depiction. Manet was one of the key artists in the transition from realism to impressionism, along with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. However, he resisted involvement in any one specific style of painting, and only presented his work to the Salon of Paris instead of impressionist exhibitions. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, created great controversy and served as a rallying point for other young painters.
