More about this artwork

This Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Aragōrō portraying the character Yoshida no Matsuwaka-Maru. In the print, the actor is captured in a moment of dramatic expression, characteristic of the kabuki theater’s emphasis on stylized action and visual impact. The actor is shown with a determined and somewhat introspective expression, suggesting a moment of tension or reflection in the play. He wears a traditional elaborate kabuki costume that features rich patterns and colors, which add to the visual intensity of the scene. The robe is adorned with geometric and floral motifs, predominantly in shades of orange, red, and brown with accents in yellow and gray, showcasing the intricate and colorful design that is typical in kabuki costumes. The background is minimalist, with faint suggestions of a natural landscape, allowing the focus to remain firmly on the figure of the actor. This compositional choice highlights the actor’s emotive posture and the fine details of his attire, drawing the viewer's attention to the craftsmanship involved in both the costume and the print itself.Overall, the artwork embodies the dynamic and expressive qualities of kabuki theater, capturing a vivid portrayal of character through Utagawa Toyokuni's skilled use of line, color, and composition in the ukiyo-e style.

Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825) was a prominent Japanese woodblock printmaker and painter of the Edo period. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), he was the chief disciple of Utagawa Toyoharu, a well-respected printmaker. He specialized in kabuki theater prints, which depicted famous actors in performances and featured dramatic scenes from plays. In addition to kabuki theater prints, Toyokuni also produced portraits of geishas, landscapes, and scenes from everyday life. He eventually became a leading master of the Utagawa School.
