More about this artwork
The artwork "Submarines In Dry Dock" by Joseph Pennell provides a detailed and dynamic view of a bustling shipyard. The scene is composed using a highly intricate style, showcasing Pennell's mastery in etching. In the foreground, there are multiple submarines housed within the confines of a dry dock, illustrating the magnitude and complexity of early 20th-century maritime engineering. The submarines, the focal point of the composition, are positioned horizontally and extend back into the middle ground, marked by their elongated hulls and conning towers featuring various external components. Workers can be observed around the vessels, implying the activity of maintenance or construction, which adds a human element to the industrial scene. The background includes additional elements of the shipyard, such as cranes, scaffolds, and other maritime infrastructure, which create a sense of depth and scale. High above the submarines, the skyline features outlines of buildings and smokestacks, suggesting the proximity of this naval scene to an urban area.Pennell’s use of fine lines and varying intensities of shading not only highlights the structural and mechanical details of the submarines and the dry dock but also imbues the scene with texture and movement. This etching not only captures a specific moment in maritime history but also reflects the industrial vigor of the era.
