More about this artwork
"The Flying Locomotive" by Joseph Pennell is a dynamic and detailed lithograph that captures the bustling atmosphere of an industrial setting, possibly a train manufacturing or assembly facility. The central feature of this artwork is the image of a locomotive being hoisted or suspended in the air by a massive crane-like mechanism, which dominates the composition. The locomotive appears as if it is almost floating amidst the busy workshop.Pennell's use of intense, scribbly lines adds a gritty texture to the piece, emphasizing the industrial context in which machinery, steam, and manual labor were pivotal. The workshop is filled with workers who seem dwarfed by the massive scale of the machinery and the building itself; these human figures contribute to a sense of scale and activity within the scene. The setting is characterized by high ceilings with large windows allowing light to stream in, casting dramatic shadows and highlighting the complexity of the machinery and the depth of the space. Other locomotive parts and possibly additional trains are scattered throughout the space, suggesting ongoing work or multiple projects being handled simultaneously. This artwork not only captures the physicality and intensity of industrial labor but also reflects the era's fascination with technological advancement and mechanical power. The "flying" locomotive is a metaphor for human achievement and the boundless possibilities of the Industrial Age.
