More about this artwork
This vibrant and dynamic painting titled "La Chaîne Simpson" by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec depicts a scene from the world of cycling, specifically highlighting the advertising of the Simpson chain. Created in a poster style, common for many of Lautrec’s works, this piece vividly portrays the intensity and motion of a bicycle race. The primary focus is on two cyclists in the foreground, intensely engaged in their ride. They are depicted with exaggerated forms—muscular legs and hunched backs, which emphasize the physical strain and movement involved in cycling. The color palette is striking, with bold blues on the riders against a stark yellow background, which may represent the road or track. In the background, a series of cyclists in white and blue are depicted more abstractly and in a smaller scale, giving the viewer a sense of depth and the high-stakes environment of competitive cycling. Aside from the racers, there are everyday onlookers and figures in the distant background, creating a contrast between the athletes and casual spectators, which adds liveliness to the scene. The text “La Chaîne Simpson” dominates the top of the painting in large, red lettering, presenting it not only as a piece of artistic work but also an advertisement for the Simpson bicycle chain, a new and innovative product at the time.

Henri de Toulouse–Lautrec (1864–1901), was an aristocratic alcoholic French artist known for his socially unacceptable lifestyle. He observed and documented the Parisian nightlife through his post-impressionist artworks. Sharing a similar style as other well-known French artists such as Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat, he created memorable works of art depicting the lifestyle that he enjoyed before passing at a young age.
