More about this artwork
The painting "Child In A Straw Hat" by Mary Cassatt features a portrait of a young girl wearing a large straw hat with a black and white band. The background is a muted, neutral tone that brings the viewer's focus primarily on the child. The girl's expression is somber and thoughtful, with her large eyes seemingly gazing into the distance. Her face is painted with a soft realism, demonstrating Cassatt’s characteristic gentle touch and attention to the subtleties of youthful features. The child's cheeks are tinged with pink, contrasting with her fair skin, creating a lifelike appearance. Her lips are gently parted, adding to the reflective mood of the portrait. She wears a light blue dress with white accents on the sleeves, which is rendered in loose brushstrokes, indicative of Cassatt's impressionistic style. The texture of the dress and the straw hat are expertly depicted, showing Cassatt's skill in portraying different materials and surfaces. The child’s hands are clasped in front of her, suggesting a moment of stillness or perhaps shy demeanor, adding a narrative element of introspection or reservedness. Overall, this painting is a beautiful display of Cassatt’s ability to capture the innocence and serenity of childhood and her mastery of light, color, and composition.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.
She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
