More about this artwork

This image depicts a design for a stained glass window by Edward Burne-Jones, intended for Saint Peter's Episcopal Church in Albany, NY. The design is richly detailed and divided into several segments that contribute to its overall religious and artistic theme. At the top of the design is a quatrefoil-shaped panel that features a depiction of presumably Adam and Eve, surrounded by a lush arrangement of leaves, which highlights themes of creation and original sin in Christian theology.Below are three vertical panels, each containing the figure of a saint or biblical figure, majestically draped in traditional robes. The figures are shown standing under gothic arches, which enhances the medieval revival style typical of Burne-Jones' work. Each figure is surrounded by a decorative halo, emphasizing their sanctity. The leftmost panel shows a figure holding what appears to be a book, symbolizing wisdom or teaching. The central panel features a figure in a bold red cloak holding a staff, which traditionally symbolizes authority or pilgrimage. The rightmost panel contains a figure with a musical instrument, perhaps a depiction of King David or another biblical figure associated with music. At the bottom of each vertical panel are smaller scenes depicting various acts of mercy or biblical narratives.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
