More about this artwork

The painting titled "Arm and Feet, Study for Mirror of Venus" by Edward Burne-Jones showcases delicate human anatomy through meticulous pencil work. The piece features a detailed drawing of a human arm and a pair of feet, presented in isolation against a stark white background. The arm is extended from the left edge of the frame, finely shaded to capture the nuances of muscle tone and skin texture, ending with a hand in a relaxed pose with slightly curled fingers. The pair of feet, drawn with similar attention to detail, show the subtleties of the toes and the weight-bearing nature of the feet as they rest flat. This study reflects Burne-Jones's typical focus on elegance and a classical aesthetic, often manifesting in his art through soft lines and delicate detailing. There's a sense of serene grace in both sets of limbs, suggesting a calm yet expressive part of a larger composition. Given the reference to "Venus," it’s likely related to a greater work exploring themes of beauty and perhaps mythological ties to Venus, the goddess of beauty in Roman mythology.Such studies illustrate the artist's process in achieving precision in the final artwork, exploring form and anatomy before committing these elements to a fuller, more complex composition. The detailed pencil strokes speak to Burne-Jones's skill in realism and his dedication to capturing human form with accuracy and depth.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
