More about this artwork

The painting "The Nativity" by Edward Burne-Jones intricately portrays the birth of Jesus Christ, a central theme in Christian iconography. The artwork is rich in symbolic and aesthetic detail, reflecting Burne-Jones' style rooted in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, known for its vivid colors and attention to naturalistic detail. In the composition, the Virgin Mary is depicted holding the infant Jesus, her posture tender and protective, enveloped by a gentle aura of holiness and motherly love. The baby Jesus is portrayed as serene and radiant, the focal point of the scene, symbolizing new hope and divine presence.Beside Mary, Joseph is presented as a supportive figure, standing by her side with a look of contemplation and reverence towards the child. This suggests his role as the earthly guardian of Jesus and his awe in the face of divine grace.Above and around the holy family, angels are depicted with strikingly detailed and patterned wings, playing musical instruments and singing. Their presence emphasizes the celestial rejoicing and heavenly proclamation of the birth of Christ. The intricate patterns on their garments and the dynamic poses suggest motion and sound, contributing to a lively heavenly celebration.A rustic setting implied by the straw on the ground and the wooden structure suggests the humble circumstances of the birth, consistent with the biblical narrative of Jesus being born in a manger.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
