More about this artwork
The artwork titled "Peasant Mother and Child" by Mary Cassatt captures a tender and intimate moment between a mother and her young child. This sketch, executed primarily in pencil, employs soft shading and fine lines to artfully depict the warmth and closeness of their relationship. In the composition, the mother is shown from the side, holding her child who appears to be looking upwards, possibly engaging with her mother. The child's face is round and full, with cheeks that suggest youth and health. The mother's attention is focused on the child, emphasizing a moment of nurturing and care. Both figures are sketched with a gentle touch, conveying a sense of delicate interaction. The drawing’s simplicity, with its limited background and detail, draws the viewer’s attention directly to the subjects, magnifying the emotional connection between them. This work is reflective of Cassatt’s recurring theme of motherhood and the bond between mother and child, a central narrative in many of her paintings and sketches. The overall effect is one of poignant beauty, spotlighting the everyday yet profound bonds of family life.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.
She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
