More about this artwork
This painting by Mary Cassatt, titled "Charles Dikran Kelekian," beautifully captures a young boy in a formal attire. The boy, presumably Charles Dikran Kelekian, stands out strikingly against a muted blue-gray background. He wears a dark suit with a neatly buttoned jacket and a white shirt, his tie peeking out. One of the most interesting elements is his hat, a dark, wide-brimmed style that adds a touch of maturity to his youthful face.Cassatt's use of pastels gives the artwork a soft but textured appearance, with visible strokes that add a sense of depth and dynamism to the clothing and background. The boy's facial expression is thoughtful and somewhat introspective, his eyes gazing directly out, suggesting a maturity beyond his years. The overall impression is both sophisticated and tender, capturing the essence of a young boy posed in a moment between childhood and the cusp of adolescence.Mary Cassatt, known for her depictions of children and family life, here focuses on creating a personal and intimate portrayal, emphasizing subtle emotional undercurrents and the elegance of the young subject’s attire. This painting is not just a simple portrait but a reflection of the era's fashion, the social context, and the unique personality of the boy depicted.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.
She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
