More about this artwork

The painting "Kaksi Tutkielmaa Kuolinnaamiosta" by Albert Edelfelt, created in 1900, features two studies of a death mask. On the left, the study is rendered in soft pencil or charcoal, showing a detailed, three-dimensional representation of an elderly man's head and features. This drawing is very detailed, portraying deep, thoughtful lines on the face, a serene expression, and articulate modeling that captures light and shadow effectively, giving a lifelike essence to the mask.On the right side of the painting, there is a more abstract, sketchy interpretation of the same death mask. It uses bolder, darker lines and appears more hurried and less detailed compared to the left study. This side conveys more of the artist's gesture, with dynamic, expressive strokes that contrast with the refined technique seen in the left drawing. Both studies together showcase Edelfelt’s skill in capturing form and emotion, even from an inanimate object, reflecting on the themes of mortality and remembrance. These studies could likely have been an exercise in observation and technique, typical of artist studies made from plaster casts or similar artifacts. The artwork not only serves as a technical exercise but also invites contemplation on deeper existential themes, mirrored by the somber subject of a death mask.
