More about this artwork
This painting by Paul Signac, titled "At Flushing," depicts a serene harbor scene characterized by Signac's distinctive pointillist style. The artwork captures a gentle, pastel-hued palette that evokes a calm, atmospheric quality. The foreground is dominated by gentle waves of greenish-blue water that suggest a choppy but placid sea, likely a day with a soft breeze. On the left side of the composition, there's a substantial tree anchoring the scene, possibly suggesting a park or natural area adjacent to the quayside. This tree, alongside a few scattered buildings and structures, forms a boundary between the land and the water. The background features a lineup of buildings and what appears to be a bridge, indicating more developed areas. The infrastructure suggests a bustling port city with various maritime activities. There are several boats and ships, some moored and some possibly in motion, reinforcing the functionality of the harbor as a place of commerce and transport. The overall effect of the painting is tranquil yet lively, capturing the dynamic essence of a working harbor while maintaining a picturesque quality that draws the viewer into a moment of pause, reflecting Signac’s mastery in conveying atmosphere and mood through color and light.

Paul Signac (1863-1935) was a French Neo-Impressionist painter. Together with Georges Seurat, Signac developed the Pointillism style. He was a passionate sailor, bringing back watercolor sketches of ports and nature from his travels, then turning them into large studio canvases with mosaic-like squares of color. He abandoned the short brushstrokes and intuitive dabs of color of the impressionists for a more exact scientific approach to applying dots with the intention to combine and blend not on the canvas, but in the viewer's eye.
