More about this artwork
In the painting, a quaint village is depicted under the cover of night, bathed in gentle moonlight and shadow. A winding road runs through the village, past a prominent white church with a tall, sharp steeple. The landscape includes rolling hills and clusters of dark, leafy trees. The village consists of several neatly arranged houses, each exhibiting simple, Colonial architecture with pointed roofs and multiple chimneys. Some houses are brightly lit, with yellow light shining through windows, suggesting warmth and life inside. In the foreground, a figure on horseback, presumably Paul Revere, rides swiftly down the curving road, drawing the viewer's eye along his urgent path. The river gently meanders through the terrain, reflecting the muted light of the moon, enhancing the serene yet dynamic scene.

Grant Wood’s (1891-1942) childhood Iowa farm life inspired him through his artistic career. Wood's interest in drawing and painting blossomed in his early adult years and he began submitting work to competitions. In 1905, he eventually won third place in a national competition and become a professional artist. His artworks focused on people, simple life in the countryside, and mythic subjects from American history. His breakthrough work, American Gothic, also featured in our collection, illustrated the reality of the American rural life.
