More about this artwork

"Still Life with Grapes and a Glass of Wine" by Edward Ladell is an exquisite example of Victorian still life painting. The artwork depicts a beautifully arranged selection of fruits and a glass of wine that invites viewers into a world of detailed abundance and rich textures. In the foreground, Ladell masterfully renders a variety of fruits including lush grapes cascading from a silver bowl, ripe peaches with a red blush, a cut peach revealing its vibrant interior, and a pear with delicate skin textures visible. Alongside these, there are raspberries and a partially eaten fig that add to the complexity and realism of the composition. The arrangement is made more luxurious by the inclusion of a velvet-like draped green cloth that provides a vivid contrast to the earthy tones of the fruits.Central to the scene is an elegantly curved wine glass, half-filled, catching the light and reflecting a small window – a testament to Ladell's skill in capturing transparency and reflection. The reflections and the intricate detailing on the silver goblet and wine glass stem further showcase the opulence of the setting. This tranquil yet rich composition not only displays Ladell's technical prowess but also evokes a sense of quiet enjoyment, reminiscent of late Victorian elegance and leisure.

Edward Ladell was a British painter known for his still-life paintings of fruit, flowers, and glass vessels. Reminiscent of the 17th-century Dutch still-life traditions, he set his subjects on a marble ledge draped with an oriental rug. Born on April 12, 1821 in Hasketon, United Kingdom, little is known of his personal life, other than that he spent his teenage years working for his father who was a coach builder. Although he was mostly self-taught, it is thought that he may have apprenticed as a pattern designer for a Flemish textile company in Colchester when he was a young man. The artist went on to exhibit at the Royal Academy, the British Institute, and the Royal Society of British Artists. He died on November 9, 1886, in Exeter, United Kingdom. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Museum of Croydon in London, the Royal Albert Museum in Exeter, and the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate.
