More about this artwork

Marsden Hartley's "Still Life" stands as a vivid example of early 20th-century American modernism. Painted in 1910, this piece vibrantly captures a simple arrangement of fruit and flowers that transcends the ordinary through Hartley’s bold use of color and form.In the foreground, an assortment of fruits including apples and oranges are showcased, their volumes accentuated by robust, almost sculptural brushstrokes. These fruits are joined by a vase, elegantly understated yet full of life with bright yellow flowers that seem to burst from the canvas. The interplay of light and shadow within the painting adds depth, making the objects appear both tangible and dynamic. The background features a dark, richly textured blue that contrasts strikingly with the vivid colors of the fruit and flowers. Patches of lighter blue and hints of white confer a sense of environment and space, though in a stylized manner that focuses on emotional rather than realistic representation.Marsden Hartley’s technique in mixing intense hues and deliberate, expressive strokes offers viewers an emotional resonance that is both powerful and enduring. This painting not only provides a glimpse into Hartley's artistic evolution but also marks an important moment in the development of American art, celebrating both the beauty found in everyday objects and the transformative power of color in abstract representation."Still Life" invites viewers to pause and appreciate the beauty in the mundane, crafted through a lens that is uniquely Hartley’s.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
