More about this artwork

Dive into the lush and lively world of Camille Pissarro through his exquisite painting, "Still Life with Peonies and Mock Orange," crafted in 1878. This masterpiece showcases Pissarro's exceptional skill in capturing the beauty and vibrancy of nature through the delicate art of still life.In the painting, an array of vibrant peonies, ranging from deep reds to subtle pinks, bursts energetically from a classically styled, blue-toned vase. The flowers exhibit a robust and tactile presence, their petals thickly layered in a manner that reflects Pissarro's distinct touch. Intermingled among the peonies are the delicate white blossoms of the mock orange, adding a gentle contrast and enhancing the bouquet with their soft, fragrant appeal.Pissarro's brushwork is remarkably dynamic, imparting movement and a sense of immediacy to the composition. The background and the table support the central focus on the flowers, with a subtle interplay of light and texture that complements the vivid floral arrangement. The choice of colors and the impasto technique enrich the canvas, giving the viewer a sense of depth and reality that Pissarro's works are celebrated for. This painting is not just a visual treat; it's a testament to Pissarro's ability to turn a simple subject into a profound visual experience.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
