More about this artwork

Explore the entrancing still life masterpiece, "Still Life with Teapot and Fruit" (1896) by Paul Gauguin, a testament to his groundbreaking approach to color and composition. In this vibrant painting, viewers are greeted with a harmonious arrangement that juxtaposes the everyday simplicity of a kitchen scene against a lush backdrop of vivid hues and expressive energy. Central to the composition is a robust teapot, finished in a rustic blue with a lively yellow flower motif that captures the eye and adds a pop of whimsy to the serene setting. This teapot, alongside a subtly draped white cloth, is surrounded by an array of ripe fruits, including mangoes and oranges, whose rich colors glow intensely under Gauguin's brush. The backdrop features a dark, yet boldly colored vase and hints at a shadowed figure, adding layers of mystique and depth to the painting. Gauguin's use of thick, textured brushstrokes and the dramatic contrast between light and shadow immerse the viewer in a dynamic interplay of the ordinary and the exotic. This painting not only illustrates Gauguin's iconic post-impressionistic style but also evokes a sense of the everyday turned extraordinary through the artist's unique lens.

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist artist. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region.
