More about this artwork

"The Siesta" is a striking painting by French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin, painted around 1892-1894. This artwork captures a serene moment of repose, typical of Gauguin's fascination with the exotic and tranquil life in faraway places, which he often depicted after his relocation to Tahiti. In this evocative scene, Gauguin showcases several Tahitian women engaged in a peaceful moment during the midday heat. The composition is set on a spacious veranda, where the vivid landscape of lush green fields and yellow hues serves as a backdrop that contrasts with the earthy tones of the wooden floor. One woman, adorned in a white hat decorated with a blue ribbon, sits upright, gently attending to another woman who lies resting on a bright orange mat. Her attention and care toward the resting woman highlight a sense of intimacy and tranquility. To the right, another woman, in a colorful traditional robe, kneels and leans forward in a posture of relaxation or conversation, contributing to the overall atmosphere of casual restfulness. Additionally, a basket of fruit near the foreground serves as a reminder of the tropical setting and the simple pleasures of daily life.Gauguin's use of broad, flat areas of color and bold outlines, are characteristic of his style, emphasizing the harmony and quietude of the scene.

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist artist. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region.
