More about this artwork
The painting depicts a young man standing in the foreground with a serious expression, looking directly at the viewer. His face is slender, with dark, neatly combed hair and prominent ears. The youth wears a dark sweater over a collared shirt. Behind him, the background features a vibrant landscape with a river flowing through the center. On the left, golden autumnal trees line the riverbank against a blue sky, giving way to a rounded hill. The right side shows trees with pink foliage, under which two small nude figures, possibly children or nymphs, are seen by the riverside and in the water. The trees have elongated, somewhat bare branches, contributing to a serene yet somewhat eerie atmosphere.

Grant Wood’s (1891-1942) childhood Iowa farm life inspired him through his artistic career. Wood's interest in drawing and painting blossomed in his early adult years and he began submitting work to competitions. In 1905, he eventually won third place in a national competition and become a professional artist. His artworks focused on people, simple life in the countryside, and mythic subjects from American history. His breakthrough work, American Gothic, also featured in our collection, illustrated the reality of the American rural life.
