More about this artwork

"Young Girl at a Window" is a painting by Mary Cassatt that captures a serene and at the same time contemplative moment. It shows a young girl sitting by a window, dressed in light, airy clothing indicative of the late 19th-century fashion. She wears a large ruffled bonnet, adding a soft, textural element to the composition and reflecting the light filtering through the scene. The girl is seated in a posture that suggests casual relaxation, yet her facial expression is thoughtful, perhaps even pensive. She gently holds a small, dark-colored dog in her lap, which adds a warm, intimate touch to the painting. The bond between the girl and her pet is subtle yet palpable, suggesting comfort and companionship. In the background, glimpses of urban scenery can be seen through the window, possibly indicating a setting in a city apartment. The loose and impressionistic brushwork used to depict the buildings conveys a sense of the bustling city life beyond the calm interior.Cassatt’s use of light and shadow, alongside her muted yet warm color palette, helps create a tender and intimate atmosphere. Overall, the painting reflects Cassatt's strong ability to convey the richness of everyday moments and her continued focus on the lives and experiences of women and children.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
