More about this artwork

This etching by Edvard Munch, titled "Nude Woman (Model Warming her Hands)" from 1994, offers a deeply expressive and somewhat raw portrayal of a female nude. Munch's style, distinctive for its emotional intensity and psychological depth, is evident even in this relatively simple composition. The woman in the artwork stands full-frontal to the viewer, unguarded and natural, with her hands held up as if warming them, which gives a sense of vulnerability or perhaps a moment of casual intimacy. Her facial expression is tranquil, and there is a gentleness to her posture that contrasts with some of the more tormented figures typically associated with Munch’s work, such as in "The Scream."The background is rendered with vertical and horizontal lines that suggest a simplistic, almost barrier-like environment, perhaps curtains or a form of backdrop that isolates her from any context, thus focusing all attention on her form and expression.Munch’s use of line in this etching is particularly striking—scratchy, uneven, yet deliberate lines add texture and depth, emphasizing the organic nature of the human body against the more rigid, abstract background. This technique enhances the emotional and physical rawness that Munch often explored through his art.Overall, this piece encapsulates themes of vulnerability, the human condition, and the natural beauty inherent in the human form, common throughout Munch’s oeuvre.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
