More about this artwork

In this painting, "Clothes on a Line in Åsgårdstrand" by Edvard Munch, crafted in 1902, we are presented with a vivid and color-rich scene depicting a tranquil moment in a domestic garden setting. At the center, a woman, depicted with a simplified form and minimal detail, is positioned beside a white house. She appears to be tending to clothes hung on a line that stretches across the lush, green yard. The scene is alive with bold, expressive brush strokes, reflecting Munch’s characteristic style that conveys emotion and atmosphere. The garden is filled with vibrant colors; patches of green, pink, and yellow dominate the space, suggesting flowers and thick grass. A blue washtub catches the eye in the foreground, adding a dynamic contrast with its circular shape and stark color.Around the garden, one can see several floating, softly formed trees and patches of sky between them, painted in pale blue and white, indicating a bright, cheery day. The overall composition, with its swirling lines and intense colors, creates a sense of movement and exuberance, while also offering a glimpse into everyday life in Åsgårdstrand, a place Munch was known to have a deep affinity for. This painting not only captures a simple domestic scene but also encapsulates a moment of everyday peace and beauty, rendered in Munch’s unique, emotionally resonant style.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
