More about this artwork

Jacob De Backer's evocative painting, "Paris Being Admitted To The Bedchamber of Helen" (1585), captures a moment rich with sensuality and mythic resonance. In this striking piece, Helen, the famed beauty of Greek mythology, is depicted reclined luxuriously on a bed, her body draped in loosely fitting garments that reveal the soft curves of her figure. Her pose is one of languorous abandonment, suggestive of sleep or a trance, her face serene and framed by flowing locks of auburn hair.To the left of this serene image, the scene pulses with anticipation and intrigue, as Paris of Troy, dressed as a warrior in red and leather, tentatively steps into the chamber. An attendant, possibly a servant or maid, averts her gaze as she holds back the curtain, allowing Paris entry to the intimate space. The contrast in movement and emotion between Helen’s peaceful repose and Paris's cautious ingress heightens the painting's dramatic tension. The artist masterfully employs rich drapery in bold colors—crimson, deep green, and translucent whites—creating a textural depth that compliments the delicate human forms. The play of light and shadow, along with the vivid detailing of muscle tone and fabric, showcases De Backer’s skillful hand and deep understanding of human anatomy and Renaissance style."Paris Being Admitted To The Bedchamber of Helen" not only represents a pivotal moment in the legendary tale that precipitated the Trojan War, but also serves as an exquisite example of storytelling through art.

Jacob de Backer (c. 1555 – c. 1591) was a Flemish Mannerist painter and draughtsman active in Antwerp between about 1571 and 1585. Even though he died young at the age of 30, the artist was very prolific and an extensive body of work has been attributed to him. Art historians are not agreed on how many of these works are autograph or the product of a workshop. The works attributed to the artist or his workshop are executed in a late-Mannerist style clearly influenced by Italian models.
