More about this artwork

The remarkable painting *"Vigilance Embracing Peace"* by Flemish artist Jacob De Backer is a superb example of Renaissance art that channels thematic richness and emotional depth, crafted in the late 16th century. Capturing the ethereal beauty of allegorical subjects, De Backer masterfully portrays the intricate dance of human virtues. In this vibrant composition, two central female figures embody the essence of Vigilance and Peace. The figure of Vigilance, identifiable by her alert gaze and the helmet she wears, a symbol traditionally associated with preparedness and protection, gently embraces Peace. Peace is depicted in a serene pose, draped in sumptuous robes that cascade in folds of soft pink and green, her demeanor calm and her expression placating. The crowning of Peace by Vigilance with an olive branch further intensifies the symbolism of harmony and accord. The painting is enlivened by the cherubic presence of two playful putti. Above, a putto playfully interacts with the figures, reinforcing a heavenly or divine approval of the virtues' union. In the lower corner, another putto rests nonchalantly against a stork, a bird often associated with vigilance and watchfulness, contributing an additional layer of symbolical meaning that enriches the overall composition.Set against a backdrop of stormy and serene skies, the contrasting elements accentuate the triumph of peace over chaos. The palette is rich and dynamic, highlighting De Backer’s skill in employing color to evoke feeling and emphasize narrative depth.

Jacob de Backer (c. 1555 – c. 1591) was a Flemish Mannerist painter and draughtsman active in Antwerp between about 1571 and 1585. Even though he died young at the age of 30, the artist was very prolific and an extensive body of work has been attributed to him. Art historians are not agreed on how many of these works are autograph or the product of a workshop. The works attributed to the artist or his workshop are executed in a late-Mannerist style clearly influenced by Italian models.
