More about this artwork
Artist: Joachim Wtewael Date: 1614"The Judgement of Paris," painted by Joachim Wtewael in 1614, is a captivating depiction of the well-known classical myth that led to the infamous Trojan War. In this intricate and vibrant painting, Paris, the prince of Troy, is tasked with a daunting and consequential decision: to determine which of the three goddesses, Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, deserves the golden apple of discord, a symbol of beauty and supremacy. The setting of this painting is a lush, idyllic landscape that immediately draws the viewer's eye with its detailed greenery and serene surroundings, contrasting the intensity of the narrative. Each goddess poses before Paris, who is seated to the left of the composition, conveying their respective charms and virtues in a bid to win the prized apple.Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, stands dignified with a helmet, while Hera, the queen of the gods, holds herself with regal poise, and Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, presents herself enticingly. Overhead, Hermes, identified easily by his winged hat, flies in to watch the event unfold, further emphasizing the painting's celestial dynamics. This work is not only a feast for the eyes due to Wtewael's masterful use of color and composition but also serves as an exploration of the themes of beauty, power, and the consequential nature of human choices.

Joachim Anthoniszoon Wtewael was a Dutch Mannerist painter and draughtsman, as well as a highly successful flax merchant, and town councillor of Utrecht. Wtewael was one of the leading Dutch exponents of Northern Mannerism, and his distinctive and attractive style remained largely untouched by the naturalistic developments happening around him, "characterized by masterfully drawn, highly polished figures often set in capricious poses".
