More about this artwork

Experience the delicate charm of Eugène Henri Cauchois's "Stillleben mit Rosen in einer Schale," a riveting still life that captures the ephemeral beauty of roses. In this painting, Cauchois masterfully brings together the organic and the artistic, creating a scene that is both tranquil and vibrant. The composition features a richly decorated golden urn juxtaposed against a scattered array of roses in shades of white, pink, and deep crimson, all resting elegantly in a dark bowl. This classical arrangement is enhanced by the presence of a draped turquoise cloth and an open sheet of music, contributing an air of cultured leisure and melodious calm to the scene. The textured brushwork and the contrast of the vivid floral colors against the muted background accentuate the lushness of the blooms, each petal rendered with careful attention to detail. This stunning visual feast not only showcases Cauchois's skill in floral painting but also reflects the period's love for combining elements of nature with those of human creation, suggesting a harmonious interplay between beauty and art.

Eugène Henri Cauchois (1850-1911) was born in the city of Rouen on February 14, 1850. He received his artistic training under the master painters Ferdinand Duboc and Alexandre Cabanel. His soft, colorful and lustrous still‑lives reflect a strong influence from the renowned Impressionist artists of his time. Similar to the techniques of the Impressionists, Cauchois' canvases are created with layer upon layer of loose and fluid brush strokes.
