More about this artwork

Emile Bernard’s painting "Au Harem" presents a captivating insight into the artist’s interpretation of life within a harem. This evocative work, rich in cultural undertones and human expression, draws viewers into a world that is both intimate and intriguing. The composition reveals a group of women, adorned in flowing robes in warm hues of orange and red, which suggest the beauty and exoticism often associated with Eastern attire. The central figure stands partially undraped, her posture and expression embodying vulnerability and a serene resignation. She is flanked by female attendants, whose gentle gestures and attentive positions suggest a narrative of care and companionship. In the shadowy background, another figure watches over the scene. The overall ambiance is one of quietude and seclusion, highlighting themes of privacy and introspection that are typically linked with the private quarters of a harem.Bernard's use of soft, diffuse light enhances the sense of calm and seclusion, focusing attention on the subtle interactions between the figures. The artist’s technique lends a softness and depth to the painting, making "Au Harem" not only a showcase of his skill but also a profound commentary on themes of femininity and the private lives of women in different cultural contexts. This painting opens a dialogue about historical perceptions versus reality, and it invites viewers to consider the complex social structures and personal stories within the secretive walls of a harem.

Émile Henri Bernard (28 April 1868 – 16 April 1941) was a French Post-Impressionist painter and writer, who had artistic friendships with Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Eugène Boch, and at a later time, Paul Cézanne. Most of his notable work was accomplished at a young age, in the years 1886 through 1897. He is also associated with Cloisonnism and Synthetism, two late 19th-century art movements. Less known is Bernard's literary work, comprising plays, poetry, and art criticism as well as art historical statements that contain first-hand information on the crucial period of modern art to which Bernard had contributed.
