More about this artwork

We are proud to present "Sketchbook," a captivating watercolor painted by Barbara Bodichon in 1861. This painting exudes a serene and contemplative atmosphere that engages the viewer in a silent dialogue with the past.At the heart of the painting is an expansive building, likely a traditional country estate or manor with prominent walls that stand out against the backdrop of a dusky sky. The subtle interplay of light and shadow suggests that this image captures a tranquil dawn or the soft glow of dusk. The structure's facade is washed in a warm, earthy tone that contrasts beautifully with the cooler hues of the sky.Surrounding the building is a sweeping landscape, rendered in soft washes of green and gray, suggesting lush fields around the manor. The foreground includes hints of foliage, possibly small shrubs or patches of grass, painted with quick, impressionistic strokes.Barbara Bodichon, a prominent figure not only in art but also in women's rights activism during the 19th century, uses a delicate balance of hues and minimalistic detail to evoke a timeless rural setting. "Sketchbook (1861)" offers a wonderful glimpse into Bodichon's artistry, revealing her ability to capture the essence of a landscape with both elegance and emotional depth. This piece invites the viewer to pause and reflect, appreciating the tranquil beauty of a moment captured in time.

Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon (8 April 1827 – 11 June 1891) was an English educationalist and artist, and a leading mid-19th-century feminist and women's rights activist.

Bodichon studied at the Ladies' College in Bedford Square founded in London, England in 1849. Here she was given instruction for work as a professional artist rather than an art instructor. Bodichon came from a liberal Unitarian family with a private income. Their independent wealth gave Bodichon more freedom to grow as an artist.
