More about this artwork

Titled "De kreek" or "The Creek" (1921), this captivating woodcut print was created by the Dutch-Indonesian artist Johannes Frederik Engelbert ten Klooster, renowned for his mastery in the woodcut technique. This piece beautifully represents his unique blend of European artistry and influence from his Indonesian heritage. The composition depicts a serene and richly textured scene of a small creek nestled within a dense tropical landscape. Dominated by a lush canopy of bamboo leaves on the left, the dense foliage creates a dramatic contrast with the delicately rendered water surface below. A small, traditional boat appears moored under the cover of the bamboo, suggesting a moment of tranquility and escape from the day-to-day bustle. In the background, the artwork opens up to a broader landscape that features gentle mountain silhouettes, suggesting the creek's location within a larger, verdant valley. The use of bold black and white contrasts not only highlights the intricacies and textures of the natural elements but also adds a dynamic rhythm to the entire scene, making the viewer’s eyes dance across the print from the dark bamboo to the reflective water and beyond."De kreek" is a splendid example of ten Klooster's ability to capture the essence of the Indonesian landscape and convey its enchanting beauty through the medium of woodcut printing.
