More about this artwork

This compelling black and white woodcut by Johannes Frederik Engelbert ten Klooster, titled "Waterval met herten," captures a tranquil yet majestic scene that embodies both the power and serenity of nature. Crafted in 1925, this artwork portrays a dynamic waterfall cascading vigorously into a frothy pool below, with its waters flowing smoothly outward. The composition is thoughtfully balanced with the inclusion of two deer inquisitively exploring the waterside. One deer stands alert on the rocks, gracefully silhouetted against the cascading water, while the other bends to drink from the swirling pool, illustrating a moment of peaceful coexistence in the wild. The contrast achieved through the artist’s masterful use of black and white intensifies the texture of the water and the delicate forms of the deer, providing a sense of depth and movement.Johannes ten Klooster, known for his profound ability to unify Western and Eastern artistic techniques, beautifully merges sharp lines typical of traditional European woodcuts with the fluid and expressive forms characteristic of Indonesian art. This synthesis not only marks a distinctive style but also evokes a cross-cultural aesthetic that makes "Waterval met herten" a timeless piece. This artwork resonates with viewers who appreciate nature and those who admire the technical proficiency involved in executing such a detailed woodcut.
