More about this artwork

In this captivating watercolor from Barbara Bodichon's 'Sketchbook' dated 1861, we are treated to a serene yet evocative coastal scene that is both inviting and introspective. Bodichon captures the raw beauty of the landscape with a delicate balance of color and light, showcasing her remarkable talent for conveying atmosphere and mood. The painting presents a rugged coastline where a massive clifftop dominates the composition. The cliff, awash in shades of faded terracotta and soft amber, stands boldly against the endless expanse of the sky and sea below. The painter's brushstrokes gracefully suggest the texture of the rocks and the gentle erosion wrought by the elements over time. The sea below is rendered in beautiful strokes of azure and deeper blues, interspersed with white caps that suggest a gentle but persistent swell. The horizon line is a soft blend of sea and sky, showcasing light pastel hues that suggest the calm of early evening or late morning light. This piece not only displays Bodichon's skill as a colorist but also reflects her affinity for wide, open spaces that are evocative of freedom and solitude. 'Sketchbook' (1861) invites the viewer to pause and reflect, providing a window into the tranquil beauty of nature as seen through the eyes of a remarkably thoughtful artist.

Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon (8 April 1827 – 11 June 1891) was an English educationalist and artist, and a leading mid-19th-century feminist and women's rights activist.

Bodichon studied at the Ladies' College in Bedford Square founded in London, England in 1849. Here she was given instruction for work as a professional artist rather than an art instructor. Bodichon came from a liberal Unitarian family with a private income. Their independent wealth gave Bodichon more freedom to grow as an artist.
