More about this artwork

Bernard Essers' striking woodcut "Beeld van Sint Nicolaas bij de haven van Tréboul" captures a moment of serene and mystic allure by the harbor of Tréboul. Crafted in 1927, this piece showcases Essers' profound skill in portraying dramatic contrasts and intricate details through the woodcut technique. At first glance, the viewer's attention is drawn to the imposing figure of Sint Nicolaas depicted as a stoic and almost monumental presence on the left of the composition. The saint is portrayed with a calm and composed demeanor, his profile set against the expansive backdrop of a cloudy sky and a dark, shimmering sea. This portrayal likely symbolizes his role as a protector of sailors and guardian of the seas.To the right, the sea itself is animated with gentle waves, upon which a small sailing boat is deftly rendered. The delicate handling of the watercraft contrasts with the bold, graphic lines used to define Sint Nicolaas and the architectural elements attributed to his attire, emphasizing the interplay between human endeavors and the natural world.Bernard Essers effectively uses stark black-and-white contrasts to highlight elements of light and shadow, creating a dynamic yet balanced composition. The simplification of forms and the elegant symmetry of the scene contribute to a timeless atmosphere, where the spiritual and the earthly coexist peacefully. This woodcut not only depicts a tranquil harbor scene but also invites contemplation on the protective presence of Sint Nicolaas, resonating deeply with the cultural and historical significance of his figure in maritime lore.
