More about this artwork

In the tranquil black-and-white world of Bernard Essers' 1925 artwork, "Twee koeien bij een boom" (Two Cows by a Tree), viewers are invited into a serene rural landscape that captures both the elegance and harmony of nature. This visually striking linocut print portrays two cows, gracefully drawn with bold, flowing lines that suggest both movement and placidity. The cows stand prominently in the foreground, one observing its surroundings attentively, which enhances the painting’s pastoral calm.Essers' use of contrast is evident, with the deep black and vivid white areas setting a dramatic and almost surreal stage. The background features a stylized tree whose foliage spreads out extensively, sheltering a farmhouse depicted in simple yet evocative detail. This setting not only frames the centerpiece—the cows—but also connects the life of the farm animals to the broader landscape they inhabit. The texture and detail in the grass and the cows’ coats are minimal yet expressive; each line is deliberate, contributing to an overall composition that is balanced and contemplative. "Twee koeien bij een boom" exemplifies the potential of linocut technique to convey depth and emotion, using stark contrasts and clean, fluid lines. This artwork is a testament to Bernard Essers' skill in capturing the essence of Dutch rural life, highlighting the timeless bond between nature and agriculture. This piece, not only a visual but also an emotional experience, reflects a quiet moment in time, preserved forever in black and white.
