More about this artwork

"Wakende vrouw" (1922), a striking creation by the artist Bernard Essers, is an artwork that eloquently fuses mystery and elegance into a single visual narrative. This black and white illustration features a surreal, Arabic-inspired interior, luxuriously detailed with patterned arches and filigreed windows. These architectural elements create a striking contrast of light and dark, lending an almost dream-like quality to the scene.Central to the composition is an intimate portrayal of two women. One lies reclining and seemingly asleep on luxurious drapery, suggesting a posture of relaxation or perhaps reverie. The other sits pensive and alert, turned away slightly, her figure sculpted by the play of light and shadow. Between them, a table adorned with a reflective lily pond and blossoming flowers adds a layer of symbolism – possibly suggesting tranquility and introspection. The detailed patterning and overall opulence of the surroundings envelop the figures in a space that feels both enchanting and secluded. "Wakende vrouw" is not just a display of mastery in fine details and contrast, but it also invites the viewer to delve into themes of contemplation, inner life, and possibly the hidden depths of the female psyche.
