More about this artwork

In the enchanting landscape painting titled "From Krødsherad" created in 1890, the Norwegian artist Thorvald Erichsen captures a serene and lush vista typical of the Norwegian countryside. The artwork features a view from an elevated vantage point, overlooking a gentle sweep of a vibrant green valley edged by a calm, reflective lake. The dynamic brush strokes in the foreground give texture to the wild grass and vegetation, suggesting the wild, untamed beauty of the location. This technique fades subtly into smoother strokes used to depict the serene surface of the water and the dense woodland on the far shore, emphasizing the tranquility of the scene.Erichsen's expert use of colors and light conveys the brightness of a clear day, with soft blues and greens dominating the palette, punctuated with hints of earth tones. The painting invites the viewer to feel the peacefulness of the Norwegian landscape, making it a captivating piece for both lovers of nature and appreciators of fine art.

Thorvald Erichsen was a Norwegian Post-Impressionist painter; primarily known for landscapes and still lifes.

Thorvald Erichsen was born in Trondheim, Norway. He was the son of Ernst Erichsen (1820-1869) and Trine Jensine Rian (1829-1884). Erichsen's father was a confectioner and died when Erichsen was very young.

Although at first he wanted to be a pianist, in 1886 he began studying law, then dropped out and attended a painting school run by Knud Bergslien, where he completed a course in arts and crafts. He later moved to Copenhagen, where he became a student of Christian Zahrtmann, who had a greater influence on his artistic development.
