More about this artwork

Artist: Frederick Carl Frieseke (1903)"Devant la glace," painted in 1903 by the American Impressionist Frederick Carl Frieseke, depicts an enchanting moment of quiet introspection. This intimate scene portrays a young woman seated in front of a mirror, engaged in the delicate act of adorning herself. The soft, muted tones and the play of light and shadow create a warmth and depth that invite viewers into this private, contemplative space. The subject, dressed in a diaphanous white gown that falls gracefully off her shoulders, is seen from behind, her figure outlined against a plush velvet chair and a backdrop of vertically striped curtains. The mirror before her captures her reflection, subtly revealing her face in profile. The elegant simplicity of the setting, with its antique brass candlesticks and hints of personal items on the dresser, enhances the overall feeling of serene domesticity.Frieseke's brushwork, characterized by its lush, tactile quality, and his masterful use of light, emphasizes the textural contrasts between the soft fabric of the dress, the sleek wood of the furniture, and the gentle luminescence of the woman's skin. This painting not only highlights Frieseke's fascination with the effects of light and color but also his ability to capture the nuanced beauty of everyday moments.
