More about this artwork

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen’s 1891 painting "The Dream" captures the vivacious and fantastical essence of the Parisian nightlife at the turn of the 20th century. This exuberant piece marries visual art with the lively world of music and dance, portrayed in a style that is distinctly characteristic of Steinlen's artistic oeuvre. The painting prominently features a beguiling female dancer at its foreground, set against a backdrop that narrates a delightful and dream-like sequence of events. She is clad in an elegant costume, her posture and expression exuding a sense of allure and mystery, perfectly embodying the spirit of fantasy that "The Dream" seeks to convey.Behind her, a whimsical scene unfolds within a large, arch-shaped frame, teeming with an array of smaller figures engaged in various theatrical acts. These include musicians, dancers, and ethereal creatures, all harmoniously intertwined in what appears to be a celebratory procession under a moonlit sky. The use of soft, warm colors enhances the magical quality of the vision, while the meticulous detail invites viewers to immerse themselves in the narrative depths of the tableau. This artwork not only showcases Steinlen’s mastery in illustrating the dynamic and ephemeral moments of performing arts but also serves as a vivid cultural artifact, reflecting the exuberance of the Belle Époque era in Paris.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his wife Emilie were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
